Proteins

Why are they so popular?

Proteins are no longer just a topic for fitness enthusiasts. They play a central role in health, energy, and well-being – and plant-based proteins are more in demand than ever. Whether you're vegan, flexitarian, or simply curious: In this article, we'll explore what proteins actually do, which plant-based sources are particularly popular, and why plant-based protein products are more than just a trend.

What are proteins?

oteins are among the most important building blocks of our bodies. They consist of amino acids – and the body uses these amino acids to constantly repair, build, and regulate itself.

They are important for, among other things:

  • Muscles, skin, hair, and nails
  • Enzymes and hormones
  • Immune system
  • Transport of nutrients (e.g., in the blood)
  • Regeneration after exertion or illness

A broad distinction is made between essential amino acids (which we must obtain through our diet) and non-essential amino acids (which the body can produce itself).

Why plant-based proteins are becoming increasingly popular

Plant-based proteins have received a real image boost in recent years – for several reasons:

  • They fit modern dietary styles: Many people today consciously eat more plant-based foods without being strictly vegan.
  • They are often easier to integrate into everyday life: Protein shakes, bars, or protein-rich bowls – plant-based proteins can be incorporated quickly and easily.
  • Sustainability plays a role: Plant-based protein sources are often perceived as more resource-efficient than animal-based ones.
  • Many people tolerate them better: Especially those sensitive to dairy products often opt for plant-based alternatives.

Popular plant-based protein sources at a glance

  1. Pea protein – the all-rounder: Pea protein is one of the most popular base ingredients in vegan protein powders.
    1. Neutral to slightly "earthy" taste, good satiety, often well tolerated
    2. Particularly interesting: Pea protein is rich in lysine, an essential amino acid that can be lacking in many plant-based foods.
  2. Soy protein – the classic with a complete profile: Soy is one of the few plant-based protein sources that naturally provides a complete amino acid profile.
    1. Advantages: very well researched, high protein content, versatile (tofu, tempeh, edamame, protein powder)
  3. Rice protein – mild and easy to combine: Rice protein has a rather mild taste and is often combined with pea protein.
    1. Rice protein tends to be higher in methionine, while pea protein provides more lysine. Together, this results in a well-rounded amino acid profile.
  4. Hemp protein – natural and high in fiber: Hemp protein is not only a protein source, but often also contains fiber and phytochemicals.
    1. Typical of hemp protein: slightly nutty flavor, more "wholesome" than super-isolated, great for smoothies and bowls.
Health benefits of protein

Did you know?

Did you know that the body builds and breaks down large amounts of protein every day?

Some amino acids are constantly recycled – nevertheless, we need a regular supply through our diet because essential amino acids cannot be stored like fat.

In short: Protein is not just a "building block," but a daily cycle.
