Amla

the indian gooseberry

Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis or Phyllanthus emblica), is a small, greenish-yellow fruit that has been valued as a medicinal remedy in Ayurveda for over 3,000 years. The fruit grows on the tree of the same name, which is native primarily to India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Its flavor is characteristic: a mixture of sour, bitter, and slightly sweet.

Nutritional Profile: Small but Powerful

Amla is one of the most nutrient-rich fruits of all. Of particular note:

  • Vitamin C: Amla contains up to 20 times more vitamin C than oranges – about 600 mg per 100 g of fruit (Singh et al., 2021)
  • Polyphenols: e.g. E.g., gallic acid, ellagic acid, flavonoids
  • Tannins: with antioxidant effects
  • Minerals: iron, calcium, phosphorus
  • Fiber: promotes digestion
  • Amino acids: support cell metabolism and regeneration

The special combination of antioxidants makes amla a natural cell protectant.

Health Benefits of Amla

1. Strong Immune System

Thanks to its high vitamin C content, amla can strengthen the immune system. Studies show that amla extract activates antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (Banu et al., 2012).

2. Blood Sugar Regulation

In a clinical study with type 2 diabetics, amla powder significantly reduced fasting blood sugar levels and HbA1c levels (Akhtar et al., 2011).

3. Cardiovascular Protection

Amla can have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels. A randomized, double-blind study showed a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol (Ramasubramaniam et al., 2015).

4. Anti-Inflammatory

The polyphenols and tannins it contains have potent anti-inflammatory effects—even comparable to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in in vitro studies (Scartezzini & Speroni, 2000).

5. Skin and Hair Care

Amla oil has traditionally been used to treat hair loss and premature graying. Studies show that amla promotes hair follicle cell proliferation and reduces oxidative stress on the scalp (Kumar et al., 2017).

Did you know?

Amla is one of the few fruits in which vitamin C is partially protected from heat damage by natural substances such as tannins and polyphenols – thus, it remains exceptionally well preserved even after heating.
