Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) belongs to the Amaranth family and is best known for its deep red color. It is a traditionally cultivated plant originating in the Mediterranean region and has been valued as a vegetable and medicinal plant for centuries. In Germany, it is particularly popular in the fall and winter seasons – as a salad, soup, juice, or fermented.
Beetroot owes its color to the plant pigment betanin, a natural antioxidant that not only looks beautiful but also has health benefits.
Health Benefits of Beetroot
1. Lowers Blood Pressure Through Nitrate: Beetroot contains natural nitrate, which is converted in the body into nitric oxide – a molecule that dilates blood vessels and thus lowers blood pressure.
- Study: A randomized study published in the American Heart Journal (2015) shows that regular consumption of beetroot juice can significantly lower systolic blood pressure in people with hypertension. (Kapil et al., 2015)
2. Improved athletic performance: The increased nitric oxide production from beetroot can also improve oxygen utilization – especially in endurance sports.
- Study: A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology (2009) shows that beetroot juice can increase endurance performance and prolong the "time to exhaustion" in athletes. (Bailey et al., 2009)
3. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects: The betalains it contains (such as betanin) have potent antioxidant effects and can help reduce oxidative stress in the body – a risk factor for chronic diseases.
- Study: A study published in Nutrition and Cancer (2013) shows that betanin can inhibit the growth of certain cancer cells. (Clifford et al., 2013)
Fun Fact
NASA has its eye on beetroot: Due to its high nutritional value and easy cultivation conditions, beetroot is being researched as a potential plant for future space missions. It could provide astronauts with important nutrients such as folic acid and iron.
