Nicotinamide Riboside Chloride

Cellular Energy and Healthy Aging

New discoveries are constantly being made in the world of dietary supplements – some more promising than others. One substance that has attracted increasing attention in recent years is nicotinamide riboside chloride (NR). But what exactly is behind this cumbersome name, what health benefits does NR offer, and what does science say about it?

What is Nicotinamide Riboside Chloride?

Nicotinamide riboside chloride is a form of nicotinamide riboside (NR) – a natural derivative of vitamin B3 (niacin). NR belongs to the family of NAD+ precursors, meaning: In the body, it is converted into NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a vital molecule found in every cell. NAD+ is crucial for energy metabolism, DNA repair, and cellular health, among other things.

With increasing age, NAD+ levels decrease – which is associated with fatigue, declining cell function, and aging processes, among other things. This is where NR comes in: It can help boost NAD+ levels again.

Health benefits

Although many long-term studies are still lacking, current research and animal studies indicate several potential benefits:

Increased Cell Energy & Metabolic Activity

By increasing NAD+ levels, NR can improve mitochondrial function – supporting the cell's "power plants." This can lead to more energy and improved physical performance.

Cognitive Health

Some animal studies show that higher NAD+ levels may be associated with improved neuronal function and a lower risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Although results in humans are still pending, this is an exciting area of research.

Cell Protection & Anti-Aging

NAD+ activates so-called sirtuins – enzymes associated with longevity, DNA repair, and healthy cell division. Therefore, NR is considered a potential candidate in longevity research.

Cardiovascular System

In preclinical studies, NR has been linked to improved vascular elasticity and a possible reduction in blood pressure. Here, too, the data in humans are still limited but promising.

Are there any side effects?

Previous studies show good tolerability. At higher doses (up to 1,000 mg daily), isolated cases of mild side effects such as nausea or stomach upset have been reported. However, consult a doctor before use, especially if you have existing medical conditions or are taking medication.
